Using Birth Control Pills For Acne

For almost all teenagers, acne is their number one problem. This is because of the disadvantages and hassles that acne brings. And for younger adults who suffer from the same predicament, the stress and anxiety is doubled as they are near the time when acne scars have the higher tendency to stay permanent. This is a known fact as 25% among the 80% affected teenagers are more likely to have scar for life from the condition.
In accordance to the growing acne problem, an alternative yet proven effective treatment is being used nowadays. If your condition cannot be treated or at least lightened by acne cream and ointments, birth control pills or oral contraceptives can now be used to treat such a problem. Clinically tested, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved three birth control pills with estrogen and progestin combination. These are Ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate (Ortho Tri-Cyclen), Ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone (Estrostep) and Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone (Yaz).
The said birth control pills work by means of controlling the sebum – the very reason why you have oily skin and unsightly facial blemishes. It is the overproduction of sebum that causes dead skin cells to build up, thus allowing access for more oil and skin, eventually causing skin ruptures.
But bear in mind that using birth control pills is not a DIY-style of medication. Consult your doctor with regards to the prescription, frequency and the proper use of birth control pills as treatment. You belong to the high-risk patient classification if you say yes to any of these: age 35 years and above, smoking, have a history of cardiovascular disease, blood clots in legs and lungs and history of breast, liver or uterine cancer.
And using a of combination birth control pills alone does not guarantee you clear skin with just a snap of your finger. Just like other medications, you can see results after several months of using it. You skin can also worsen first, before really seeing the clear skin that you want. Side effects are also likely, like headaches, slight increase in heart palpitations, high blood pressure, high potassium and blood clots. Change in menstrual flow, nausea and vomiting, breast tenderness and decreased libido are also noted. Pregnant women are advised not to take it as it can cause fetal problems and deformities.

Unapologetically Matchy-Matchy!

Recently, I was browsing in one of my favorite stores, and one of the sales women said to me, “Oh, one of your clients was just in, and she bought that necklace you told her about.”  (I had seen this necklace that was SO her and sent her a picture).  She then said, “I showed her another necklace as well that she loved, but we couldn’t find earrings to match so she didn’t get it.  She told me that she’s ‘matchy-matchy’ like Ginger.”  I laughed.  Yes, there are a few of us left!

No, I do not go so far as to have my handbags and shoes be exact matches, but I do insist they blend and make sense together.  I sometimes watch “What Not To Wear” and, while I think a lot of their advice is valuable, I sometimes look at the outfits they create and think “Really!  It looks like a mish-mash – like they got dressed in the dark!”  It just goes to show you that fashion is not an exact science and personality and personal preference play into it.  Clearly, there’s a stylist for every taste.

So, while I never expect my clients to be matchy-matchy, I do know that most of them rely on me to help them know how far they can push the envelope (if that’s what they want to do).  It’s funny, too.  Twenty years ago, as a new image consultant, I attended a fashion seminar at Henri Bendel’s, and I clearly remember the woman saying with great disdain that matchy-matchy was so “out!”  I briefly questioned my style, but then I took a long look at what she was wearing and thought, if that’s the alternative I’ll stick with what I’m wearing.

I have remained true to my personal style preference and wear it with confidence.  I admire those who are funkier and trendier than I am and who wear the look well (not everyone does!).  I also know that there is no one right way.  If there were we’d all look like clones – what fun would there be in that?

So, matchy-matchy or not, honor your own preferences.  That said, don’t be afraid to step outside your self-imposed box and try new things.  That’s how we keep it fun and fresh.  But if a trend doesn’t work for you, that’s absolutely fine.  Just know (or find out) what does and be true to that!

Laser Hair Removal Risk- Know What They Are Today

Among the top choices in methods for removing unwanted hair is laser treatment and it has become quite popular especially to those who want a faster way of dealing with this pesky problem.  Just like any cosmetic procedure however, laser hair removal poses certain risks and it is imperative that you know what they are before you decide to go through with the treatment.
The most common laser hair removal risk is burning.  The heat coming from the light used in order to singe the hair follicles can become too high that it causes burns and blisters on the skin surface.  The damage can range from superficial to serious and there are even some cases where the burns are too critical that emergency surgery had to be done in order to save the patient.
Another laser hair removal risk is hyper pigmentation.  This condition is caused by the over production of melanin in the skin.  This is particularly difficult to deal with especially for people with fair skin because the pigments will be very ostentatious and there is no quick remedy that can be used to correct it.
The thing with hyper pigmentation is that you will not notice it at once.  The pigments will not be noticeable immediately after the laser treatment.  However, the more treatments you have, the more serious the condition will become until you see all the dark spots on the area where you had the procedure done as well as the surrounding parts.
Hypo pigmentation is another risk that may arise from laser treatments.  This is the exact opposite of hyper pigmentation because in this case, the problem is lack of melanin on the skin.  This is equally a cause for concern because lack of melanin on the skin can develop into other serious skin conditions.  You have to remember that melanin protects the skin and without such protection, it becomes vulnerable to all sorts of threats such as melanoma or skin cancer.

Here are some tips for you to avoid laser hair removal risk:

• Talk to your dermatologist about the procedure.  Relay your concerns so that if there is any way that the procedure can be performed without the risks of burning and pigmentation, the necessary steps can be taken.
• Communicate with your doctor while the procedure is being done.  If you feel that the heat is too much for your skin to take, make sure that you inform the attending dermatologist at once in order for the treatment to be stopped before serious damage is inflicted.
• Do not go beyond what is recommended to your by the dermatologist just because you want all the hair in your body permanently removed.  There is only so much that your skin can take over a period of time which means that you have to let it sit before you start with  treatments again.
• Take the precautions as instructed by your doctor.  If there are certain topical or oral medications that you are instructed to use in order to pre-empt any infection or negative reaction, make certain that you do so.
