Acne is very common but its not considered a medical condition although it affects more people than other health conditions. It is approximated that four out of five people will suffer from acne anywhere from very mild to extremely severe. The majority are teenagers although it can one can be affected by acne at any age.

The signs of acne are easily to see as blemishes and small infections on the skins surface. Acne can occur as whiteheads, which are as a result of a hair follicle becoming clogged from normal oil secretions and dead cells. They derive their name from the pus inside that is visible on top of the pimple.

Blackheads are much the same, the only difference is that instead of whitening the surface the surface stays open and darkens which creates a small black spot. It is uncommon for these to swell and become pimples.

The more painful form is known as cyst and can last longer, they are thick lumps that just below the surface of the skin. The infection in this case is more severe. These usually are large and cause swelling and redness.

Although there are many stories concerning the cause of acne the main reason continues to be bacteria. Bacteria on the skin are different and build beneath the surface of the skin. Hair follicles cells and pores are the only ones that are affected by acne and become infected.

Hormones, medications and bacteria cause buildup that causes acne. It s also said that heredity may be a factor.

There is no physical impairment or fallout from acne. Nonetheless, the emotional, social and psychological factors be can be significant. Severe acne sufferers tend to have self esteem issues without consideration to age. But teenager suffering social pressure are usually the most affected.
