The lost art of elegance reads the headline on the cover of Style Magazine, ‘The Sunday Times’ Supplement.
Their fame was such that even today, they are an inspiration to the younger generation. The little black dress, made famous through Audrey, the Kelly bag which Herm?s designed for Grace.
Why then are there not more women around who actually make an effort with dressing stylishly or seek advice to learn how to dress. It seems that we live in an age where ‘casual’ is king and the more scruffy the better plus an utter lack of care about appearance.
If only women realised that it is so easy to achieve elegance by simply combining the right clothes, colours and accessories and of course behaving with decorum. The clothes need never be expensive, just well combined. Added to that, never leaving the house without perfect Make Up and Hair Style. Lack of time is the excuse but ultimately this can be translated into the “can’t be bothered” attitude.
Often, what would look very reasonable as an outfit, is spoilt by too short a skirt, (women wanting to remain young), or some unsuitable tights and overly high heeled shoes plus accessories that have been thrown together any old how. A sign of maturity is actually accepting your age and buying items that complement Older Women Fashions.
As a mature women it is best to stick to soft materials and collect clothes in pastel shades. This does not mean that you can’t occasionally be daring and wear something in a strong colour. Pay attention not to have a plunging neckline, this is counterproductive to being elegant as the skin on your upper chest will perhaps not be so smooth besides there is nothing terribly smart about showing too much flesh even for the young girls, it is imply rather suggestive and can look ghastly. It is also a good idea to wear clothes with sleeves as the upper arms can look saggy as you get older.
Shoes should have moderate heels, it will look odd to have high heeled shoes besides which they are not comfortable and downright dangerous.
If you have allowed your hair to go grey, adjust your colour palette to show it off to best effect. White hair can look very distinguished but avoid shades of blue in it, it will no longer look natural. The hairstyle too should be adapted to your age. This can be short but should not appear masculine. Long hair can be tricky as beyond the age of 50, leaving it hanging around the shoulders like a young girl does nothing for elegance. Rather experiment with putting it up. Have your hairdresser show you how this can be done quickly and effectively and look smart. Even the young look great with their hair tucked up and tidy.
In short, the advice for elegance is to keep everything natural, nothing overdone. Makeup too needs toning down. Avoid too much powder. In the past, older women plastered themselves with powder and it was so obvious that there was a thick layer of makeup underneath that. This shows lines and wrinkles more than anything.
A light liquid foundation with a light brushing of powder will be much more effective. Eye make up also needs to be adjusted to the age group and lighter shades apply.
In short, as the years go by, selecting a good wardrobe and the right makeup will give you the edge. Added to that, perfect classy accessories will ensure an elegant appearance.
Timeless pieces of clothing in your wardrobe may still fit you and if they are of good quality, they can be part of many ensembles. With new clothes, select only good quality that will combine with the existing pieces to arrange different outfits. There is so much scope but the knowledge how to assemble the clothes and accessories is often lacking.
