Birthmarks

Many people are born with birthmarks, which are generally defined as a visible mark on the skin that is unique to the individual and does not quickly go away. Birthmarks can take on a wide variety of coloring, shapes and sizes. Most birthmarks are small, not noticeable, or unlikely to show outside of clothing. However, others can take a more prominent appearance, and some can pose an eventual health risk. For these reasons, some people go to cosmetic surgeons for birthmark removal procedures.

During history as “heretics” were sought out and burned, a birthmark became a dangerous thing to have. Some viewed as a mark of the devil, and women with these blemishes were at risk of being fingered as a witch. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, “The Birth-Mark,” is about a man who grows to loathe his wife’s blemish so much that he eventually leads her to her death.

The surgeon is the one who will quote how much you are going to spend in a single treatment. Birthmark removal cost may also be more expensive for doctors who have been practicing cosmetic surgery, including removing birthmarks for a very long time.

As mentioned, birthmarks come in different forms, and they have in fact been classified according to certain unique types. “Salmon Patches” are flat, thin markings that are usually located on the back of the neck, on the upper lip, on the upper eyelid or right between the two eyebrows. Colored either red or light pink, Salmon Patches are also referred to as “Angel Kisses,” “Macular Stains,” and “Stork Bites.”

The pulses of laser light would feel like tiny bands of rubber snapping against your skin. Most people would not find this painful, but, the threshold for pain is unique to everyone. Doctors usually let the patients apply anti-inflammatory and anesthetic creams prior to the procedure. If you are the type to feel pain easily, your doctor might prescribe a local anesthetic.

Birthmarks, also called hemangiomas, show up early in life. Most birthmarks are caused by a collection of blood vessels in one place. Some might appear as sticking out from the skin, or others might be smooth and lying flat. In most circumstances, birthmarks are harmless. They might even disappear as a person grows older.

As many as one in three babies are born with a birthmark. These are neither painful or harmful, although about one in a hundred will require medical treatment. If the birthmark is hidden from view it is generally not a problem, but if it is on the face or neck parents will often want to do all they can to remove the mark, especially if baby is a girl.

Contrary to popular belief, the majority of birthmarks are not hereditary although there are some types that are. Their exact cause is actually unknown. Vascular marks are simply a group of skin lesions called nevi or naevi which appear as a soft, raised area on the skin that is often red on the surface. But different types of birth marks differ in size and color.
