Beauty – How To Succeed
The result of natural selection is that, over the course of a number of generations, creatures that have developed beneficial features will thrive at the expense of those less fortunate. Such developments represent the fundamental force that is an essential factor inherent in natural evolution, and represents the Biological insight immortalised by Charles Darwin. Accordingly, a sexual creature who wishes to mate with a suitable partner would be expected to avoid potential partners who possessed unusual (non beneficial) features, while being particularly attracted to those individuals displaying a predominance of beneficial features.
Research studies have indicated that good looking students receive higher marks for their work than do those students whose appearance may be regarded as ordinary. In much the same way, attractive looking patients have been shown to receive more individual care from their doctors. Taking this to a surprising conclusion, studies have even concluded that handsome offenders receive less punitive sentences than their less attractive counterparts.
The aspect of physical beauty may even be influential in respect of how much money an individual earns. This is the focus of one particular study which came to the conclusion that those who were regarded as being physically unattractive earn, on average, 5-10% less than so-called ordinary looking people. Furthermore, the study showed that those who were considered as being good looking were able to earn 3-8% more than ordinary looking people. Such discrimination against individuals solely on the basis of whether they were attractive or not is known as “lookism”.
The characterisation of an “ideal beauty” is represented in a person who is admired, or possesses features widely associated with beauty in a particular culture. There are many historical figures that have come to personify beauty itself, such as Cleopatra, Helen of Troy, and Marilyn Monroe. The subjective experience, which refers to the sensory buzz and awareness associated with a perceptive mind, related to “beauty”, often involves the interpretation of some entity as being as one and in harmony with nature, which may lead to feelings of attraction and emotional well-being.
The desirability of a beauty ideal may be a harbinger for racial oppression. Accordingly, there is a well established notion in American society that black features are less attractive or desirable than white features. The perception that all that was black was inherently ugly was highly damaging to the psyche of African Americans, manifesting itself as internalised racism, in which members of marginalised groups hold an oppressive view toward their own group, or start to believe in negative stereotypes of themselves.
In the natural world, most species of animals rely on physical traits or, in some cases, a chemical signal, called a pheromone, which instigates a natural response in another member of the same species, to attract a mate. On the other hand, in the case of humans, the attribute that is often ascribed to in respect of “attraction” is the quality of inner beauty. And what is the nature of this imperceptible form of appeal? Since the dawn of creation, qualities that have aspired to satisfy such appeal include, amongst others, kindness, sensitivity, tenderness, compassion, creativity and intelligence.
While I was doing my research for this Mary Kay success tips article I found that according to a recent publication by the Direct Selling Association (DSA), over 75% of those engaged in direct sales businesses are women. The publication observed that no other activity has presented women better business opportunities than the various aspects of direct marketing.
We can find two reasons for this. First, if family finances weren’t important considerations, most women would prefer to be home for their children, taking them to school and picking the kids up after school. Second, virtually all companies selling their products through direct marketing parade a line of skin care and beauty products; two areas of life that hold strong appeal to the womenfolk.
Mary Kay Ash, the founder of Mary Kay Inc is an inspirational figure for women in business all over the world. After working for 25 years in the direct sales industry, she eventually became disillusioned about the limited advancement opportunities for women, regardless of their business credentials. Mrs Ash used her meagre $5000 in savings to launch her own line of beauty products in 1963 and has never looked back. To date, the Mary Kay brand has generated in excess of $2.4 billion in sales.
