We are made up of cells & it’s no surprise that the root cause of disease stems from unhealthy cells. For centuries, we simply accepted the idea that disease was a terrible but inevitable occurrence in life. How many of us have heard or thought diseases were something we “caught” or that were passed on through genetics. While this is true to some degree, we have been enlightened recently with the understanding that most diseases–especially “lifestyle” diseases–are caused by multiple factors, namely diet, exercise habits, and environment. There’s no if and’s or but’s about it–75% of all diseases are preventable. Good health will never go out of style. The phrase You Are What You Eat is so true. The next time you look in the mirror and you know you are looking hot on the outside. Think about your cells on the inside.
Your cells are your most prized possessions, not the make-up you put on your face, the designer outfit, the gorgeous hand-bag or those sexy stilettos. Healthy cells are worth their weight in platinum & diamonds.
In the movie The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep’s character gave fashion-clad women a bad reputation. We didn’t walk away from the movie saying no to Prada. No, Prada is still fabulous–but the character wearing it in the movie wasn’t. Often things that are bad can be disguised as good. As a case in point, consider sugar.
Sugar causes inflammation, which is the cause of many diseases in the body. Sugar also accelerates the aging process. I love sweets, but ladies, know that too consuming too much sugar is like Eating With The Enemy. Inflammation isn’t technically a disease, but its underlying presence is usually a telltale sign for numerous conditions. When the body’s is inflamed it basically means the immune system turns against itself. The solution is to sweeten your diet with antioxidants. Oxidative damage can be controlled by dietary antioxidant nutrients, which in turn slow the inflammatory cascade normally witnessed with free radical damage.
I know when you hear buy one get one free it sounds exciting. If you are a bargain shopper it’s a great way to stretch your dollar. However when it comes to Free Radicals they should stay off your shopping list. We have been hearing about them for some time now. And research continues to demonstrate that the damage caused by Free Radicals-also called oxidants-is a major factor in the development of a wide variety of diseases and disorders. You better watch your back because there’s nothing fancy about Free Radicals. An average of 75,000 are attacking our beautiful healthy cells daily.
Without getting too scientific, Free Radicals are created when atoms are missing an electron, making them unstable. To become stable, these atoms seek out other stable atoms to steal an electron. These atoms then become unstable , and a vicious cycle is created. Beautiful healthy cells are eventually damaged or destroyed due to this Free-Radical Activity. Damaged cells replicate poorly and can contribute to disorders ranging from cancer to heart disease. The #1 cause of death in America is Heart Disease. Remember 75% of all disease is preventable with the right food choices. With cancer statistics (1 out of 3 women) increasing we should be thinking about the health of our cells 24 hours a day, 8760 hours a year.
