When To Pick A Prom Dress
In September, my cousin and I were having lunch, her cell phone rang and it was her daughter. Her daughter was so excited I would have had to leave the restaurant to avoid hearing their mother/daughter conversation. She told her mom that she had found the “perfect” prom dress. After several texts and sending of multiple pictures of “the dress”, permission was given for her to purchase it. My cousins main objection was that her daughter would not be satisfied with the dress in eight months, when the Prom was going to take place. When my cousin hung up for the last time, she told me that six of her daughter’s friends had purchased their “perfect dress“. I was surprised. Things certainly have changed since I went to the prom. The Proms I attended were in the mid 80’s, having big hair was as important as what the dress looked like and whether your date could borrow his parents car for that special night. Dates me I know!
Upon further inquiring of mother’s of prom age girls, I found that purchasing a prom dress months, even a year in advance was very common. Now, procrastination of buying a dress equals a second rate dress. Seems crazy, but seems to be the norm.
My curiosity of purchasing prom dresses come from knowing that someday my seven year old daughter and I would most likely have the prom dress conversation ourselves. Maybe we should start shopping for “the dress” now.
