For a woman, her leg shaving routine is something that has to be done. The last thing that most women want is to have hairy legs. The problem is, a lot of women don’t know how to shave their legs properly and the end result is a red, bumpy sore leg often accompanied by razor burn.
While it’s not quite like saving the best for last, waiting until the end of your shower will make shaving much easier. Ask any man. They usually wait until the end (or after) their shower to shave, giving their stubble time to soften. Not only is it easier to shave, but it allows for a much closer shave. The hair on your legs is coarse and needs time to soften in the hot water. Shaving at the beginning of your shower or bath, before the hair softens, will almost guarantee nicks, cuts and/or razor-burn. So to save yourself some pain–and get smoother legs–by saving the shaving until the end.
If you only remember one tip from this article, remember this: conditioner is the best substance to use to shave with! Yes, I’m talking about hair conditioner. Conditioner provides a thin layer of protection on your skin, helps the blade glide smoothly, and further softens your hair. I keep a large bottle of inexpensive conditioner in my shower (I get the jumbo size from Costco, with a pump in it–which also makes it easier to dispense) that is dedicated for shaving. Use about the same amount that you do when putting lotion on your legs. Make sure you rinse your blade well after shaving. Try this tip once and you’ll never go back to soap or shaving cream again!
At least in the beginning there was one and only one logical reason to shave your legs for an Ironman. It all started with cyclists who shave their legs all the time in the event they have one of those nasty crashes where exposed skin meets the asphalt highway. Its far easier to clean and treat road-rash if the blood and dirt isn’t dried and matted into your hair. Actually, it works. I’ve crashed a few times and its surprising just how much faster these abrasions actually heal when the affected area is smooth and easy to treat. Plus, pulling off a Bandaid becomes virtually painless.
If one were to surmise that western women shave about one third of their body a minimum of two times a week, that’s a whole lot of shaving going on. However, because legs, bikini or underarm areas aren’t considered as delicate as the face and can be hidden under clothing if something goes wrong, cheap razors, foams, soaps and lotions are commonly used. Compound this with a shaving technique that pulls the razor from the ankle to the top of the knee in one uninterrupted stroke and it’s no wonder your body is producing stubble that could take an eye out. Furthermore, when did unsightly irritating razor rash and ingrown hairs in areas that might lead one to believe a trip to a “free clinic” is in order, become an acceptable standard?

The act of not shaving was seen as a protest against oppression. Not shaving was showing solidarity with the cause. These battles for equality were mostly fought in words and debates although, some protest actions were staged in the form of rallies and protest marches. In this way, woman fought for their right to be treated equally to men.

Shave in the direction of hair growth. Shaving against your hair growth causes more friction and makes for too close a shave, making your skin prone to in-grown hairs. Make sure that you do a smooth shave by shaving in the direction of your hair growth. It may not seem as effective in cutting the hair down, but it is safest for your skin.
It is also advisable to prepare your hair and skin before shaving. Shaving creams, oils or foams will help soften the area to be shaved, making way for a smoother shave. It’s also a great idea to exfoliate before shaving to get rid of dead skin cells and keep your skin soft.
