Acne Is As Common As The Common Cold
Everyone has had an awful experience waking up to see a glaring red zit staring right back at you in the mirror. Acne is perhaps the most common skin problem a lot of us encounter. Despite this, acne is not as severe as other skin conditions which can be more embarrassing while some are even life-threatening. The skin is our body’s largest organ that is why skin problems can be psychological as well as physical. According to Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Amenakas, Yale University School of Medicine’s assistant clinical professor, the five most common skin disorders are: acne, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, skin cancer and psoriasis.
Although these five skin problems usually appear on most people’s list, there is a lot of disagreement among experts about what the prevalence rates of the conditions really are. Acne is a skin condition that results to pimples when the passageway that connects the pores of the skin to the oil glands become blocked. Acne can appear in many forms which usually appear on the face, shoulders, neck, back and chest. Blackheads and whiteheads are two of the most common forms of acne while cystic and nodular acne are more severe and can cause scars deep in the skin.
Up to eighty percent of Americans will experience acne at some point in their lives while sixty percent will continue to experience it well into adulthood. Several factors such as heredity can play a role in the development of acne, but according to Alexiades-Amenakas, hormones are perhaps the most important factor. “In both men and women, the reason it peaks in the teenage years is because growth hormone is released at a very high frequency. Production really spikes and valleys in the course of a day, and this surging of the growth hormone is why acne is most severe in the teenage years.”
There are a lot of different skin problems that can arise at any given time in our lives. Fortunately, the treatment options for these different skin problems which include acne, dermatitis and eczema have greatly improved. It is important to know and research about acne facts and the treatment options that are best for your skin type before figuring out how to get rid of acne that is plaguing you. Everyone wants nothing but clear and acne-free skin that is why you must know what the best skin care regimen for your skin is since trying products which may not be safe for you can do more harm than good.
