How Light Can I Get With A Box of Blond?
Hi, I’m Jasen James, a professional hair colorist and your HairColorHelper. I’m here to answer your questions about coloring your hair at home. How light can you get from a box of blond?
Well girls, I hope I’m not going to ruin your day, but you can’t get very light from a regular box of blond. The darker you are naturally, the less likely you will end up blond. You’re more likely to end up caramel, or golden, or maybe even golden nugget.
That’s because most formulas on the market are what’s called 20-Volume, which means the color can only lighten or darken up to two shades from your natural color. That doesn’t work out to a very big change. And if your hair is already colored, forget it. Color doesn’t lift color.
For previously colored hair, you might have luck with a 40-volume product because it’s supposed to lift your color four levels lighter. But if you’re really dark you won’t get to blond and might end up at caramel. That’s not so nice for your allover color, but it might be okay for highlights.
I think it’s important to realize that not everyone was meant to be a blond. Light colored hair may clash with your skin tone and your eye coloring. Going blond also means a lot more maintenance. You’d have to touch up the roots at least once a month. Again, that’s not for everyone.
